Managed and Unmanaged Node

After a successful discovery, all devices in the network are discovered. Data is collected for all devices which have appropriate discovery credentials. These devices are categorized as ‘Managed’ nodes and the data collection type/ data collection credential profile is mapped to the node accordingly.

For instance if a WMI profile (say WP1) is defined at a domain level, and a system under the domain is discovered, then the system collects data with the ‘WMI’ data collection type and is mapped with the data collection credential profile ‘WP1’

If a device is discovered and if data collection is not possible with any of the supplied credentials then the device is classified as ‘Un-Managed’. The following section describes the user interface to manage the discovered systems.

1. Click the ‘Settings' tab. In the 'Asset and Inventory Management' section, click 'Node Operations’. All the managed devices are listed here.

2. Select 'Unmanaged' from the 'Scope' drop down. To get more details as to why the device is classified as un-managed click 'Click here to diagnose' to get crucial insights like

3. Use the check boxes to select the devices that need to be managed and click the ‘REDISCOVER’ button. This action asks for the data collection type to be used and the appropriate credential profile that needs to be used. Once this is mapped to the system , the system is rediscovered and classified as ‘Managed’. Also immediate data collection is attempted for the device

Notes: 1. If in case you need to add a new credential profile, click ‘Settings' then from the 'Asset and Inventory Management' section click 'Profile Manager’. Use the screen to define a new credential profile that would be appropriate for the device that is to be changed to the ‘Managed’ category

4. Once the device is classified as managed, the device is listed in the discovery screen from which data collection details for the device can be viewed.

Scope

In the case of scope being Managed devices, Unmanaged devices, Licensed devices, Unlicensed devices, Agent Licensed devices, Agent Unlicensed devices, Deleted devices, Reset Discovery key and Zombie nodes, an audit log is maintained and can be opened from the corresponding listing window.

Licensed devices - Select this option to view the list of licensed devices. The devices can be managed or un-managed devices

Select the device and click 'Unlicense' to move the device to 'Unlicense' state.
Select the device and click 'Delete' to move the device to 'Deleted' state. Devices that are deleted are not listed in the Inventory > Discovery screen. All discovery data and discovery job data are deleted.

Unlicensed devices - Select this option to view the list of unlicensed devices. The devices can be managed or un-managed devices. Select the device and click 'License' to move the device to 'License' state or select the device and click 'Delete' to move the device to 'Deleted' state.

Agent licensed devices - Select this option to view the list of agent licensed devices. The devices can be managed or unmanaged devices. Select the device and click 'Unlicense' to move the device to 'Unlicense' state or select the device and click 'Delete' to move the device to 'Deleted' state.

Agent unlicensed devices - Select this option to view the list of agent unlicensed devices. The devices can be managed or unmanaged devices. Select the device and click 'License' to move the device to 'License' state or select the device and click 'Delete' to move the device to 'Deleted' state.

Deleted devices - Select this option to view the list of deleted devices. Select the device and click 'Add to Monitor' to post the discovery job and collect discovery information such as IP address, host name, BIOS serial number, MAC ID etc.

Reset discovery key - Select the device and click 'Reset discovery key' to reset the discovery information of the device and post the discovery job again to collect the discovery information.

IntelAMT enabled devices - Select this option to view the list of all devices that are IntelAMT enabled. Select the device and click 'Disable' to disable the IntelAMT enabled device.

IntelAMT disabled devices - Select this option to view the list of all devices that are IntelAMT disabled. Select the device and click 'Enable' to enable the IntelAMT disabled device.

Get Inventory Data - Select this option to post the on-demand 'Get Inventory' job for a particular host (s). Select the host (s) and click 'Get Data' to post the job to collect inventory information.

Map Inventory Profiles - Select this option to map the selected hosts to the corresponding inventory profiles as described below

Select the host, click 'Map Inventory Profile' and select the inventory profile to map the host to the selected inventory profile

Map System Category - Select this option to change the device category. Select the device, click 'Change Category' and select the device category to change the category of the device.

Add Label - Select this option to change the label of a particular host. Click on 'Host Label' to display the 'Edit Label' dialog box. Change the host label and click 'Update'.

Select the host and click 'Reset Label' to reset the label to the previous value.

Note: Label is like an alias for host name. Across SapphireIMS, the machine or host is displayed with the label selected here

Zombie Nodes - Select this option to display the list of zombie nodes. Zombie nodes refer to those devices from which SapphireIMS is unable to collect data for more than 30 days. Refer to Zombie Nodes. Select a device and click 'Activate' to manually activate data collection of the device and move the device to 'Managed' state.

Update DHCP Status - A discovery key check is performed for performance enabled nodes which are DHCP enabled. An option is provided to manually select the nodes to be DHCP enabled as shown below.

To configure the DHCP status, in the 'Node Operations' listing page 'Scope' drop down, select 'Update DHCP Status'
Check the box 'IsDHCP Enabled' and click 'Update' to enable DHCP for the corresponding node

Note: Discovery key check is not performed for performance enabled systems which have static IP configuration.

Inventory Sync Notification: Select this option when you need to send notification to a third party server at the customer site. Notifications are generally sent when a new job is posted, a new system is discovered, data collection task is completed by the system or when a job is moved to the next state.

Check the nodes and click the 'Notify Integration Server' button when notifications have to be sent for only the selected nodes
Click the 'Bulk Notify Integration Server' button when notifications have to be sent for all the nodes.

Conflicted Systems

A conflict usually occurs when there are multiple systems with the same Host Name/BIOS Serial Number or MacID. This conflict can lead to an inaccurate inventory list. SapphireIMS detects these conflicted systems and provides an option to retain the system with the latest information and merge the previous details.

For example, in scenarios where two systems have the same Host Name/BIOS Serial Number or MacID but one may have an upgraded version of 'Operating System' these systems can be merged to retain the system with the newer version of 'Operating System'. Follow the steps below to merge or delete the conflicted systems.

Go to Settings Tab->Asset and Inventory Management->Node Operations-> Conflicted Systems Tab

1. Select Conflict Type that is based on duplicate host name, BIOS serial number or MAC ID

2. Click on BIOS serial number, host name or MAC address

Merge Type: Retain the system having latest inventory

Select 'Retain the system having latest inventory' option and click 'Merge' button. This action will retain the system having latest inventory and delete the other systems permanently from the inventory.

Merge Type: Manual Merging

1. Select the node to be retained

2. Select the system associated with an asset to be linked to the retained node if necessary

3. Check the unwanted nodes to be deleted

Merge Type: Delete the systems

Select Merge Type as 'Delete the systems' and check the nodes to be deleted from the inventory list.

To view the history of conflicted systems, click on the 'Conflicted Systems Audit Log' tab.
